Hispanic Ministry
Our approach to Hispanic Outreach is to train and assist urban or suburban Lutheran congregations whose neighborhoods have experienced signifcant cultural change. The objective is to build relationships with Latinos in the neighborhood, and then lead them to Christ through Bible study and worship. We do this by offering programs such as English Language Learning (ELL) classes and bilingual Vacation Bible School. Such programs lead quickly to holding a bilingual praise and worship service. ELL classes are currently being held at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Olathe, Kansas, and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kansas City, Kansas. We also have a Hispanic congregation, Iglesia Luterana Jesus el Buen Pastor, in the Westside, a primarily Hispanic neighborhood near Southwest Boulevard. "El Buen" is in the process of remodeling its new building, and the congregation is very excited to have its own space.

Black Ministry
This ministry focuses on African-American youth. A specially designed Vacation Bible School is held every summer. Young leaders are being raised up in the congregation who want to make a difference in their community. We are actively seeking a Lutheran Black pastor for our congregation Good Shepherd Missionary Lutheran Church. The Lord is working! Please continue to pray for us during this process. Contact LUMA Executive Director, Tom Eckard for more information. Check out pictures from our VBS at Hollis Renewal Center's day camp in July 2008 below!

Social Ministry
Food Pantry - For over 30 years we have been serving hundreds of families each month with a week's supply of groceries, as well as personal hygiene items, fresh vegetables, fruit and dairy products. Groceries are provided through food drives conducted at KC area Lutheran congregations. Food pantry activities always include the presentation of the Gospel, prayer and praise.
Christmas Store - In early December, eligible families "shop" for a new gift for each family member, and also receive a Christmas box of food, blankets and a Bible. Each year we serve over 325 families (more than 1,500 men, women and children). The gifts are donations from area LCMS congregations and their individual members. This outreach to the neighborhood is an effective evangelism tool! |
